Eixample

A district in Barcelona, Spain.

When I have a future destination in mind to travel to, I do as much reading about it as possible.  Reading about the philosophy behind why this district was designed the way it was is astounding.  The grid pattern of octagonal blocks, with long and wide streets are thanks to the architect and urban planner Ildefons Cerda.  He envisioned a city with better living conditions that provided better sunlight, ventilation and green space for inhabitants.
