Invoked Computing

Invoked Computing: spatial audio and video AR invoked through miming

Above is a link to research being done in the realm of human computer interactions, By using high tech object recognition software in combination with directional speakers and projectors, any object can become an interaction point between a user and a computer. This development implies that in the future the concept of associating computing with a certain type of experience relating to the technology being used i.e. laptop, desktop, smartphone etc, may be soon over and new opportunities for interaction design will be able to be investigated. Below is a video giving an example of the possibilities of this technology.

Eixample

A district in Barcelona, Spain.

When I have a future destination in mind to travel to, I do as much reading about it as possible.  Reading about the philosophy behind why this district was designed the way it was is astounding.  The grid pattern of octagonal blocks, with long and wide streets are thanks to the architect and urban planner Ildefons Cerda.  He envisioned a city with better living conditions that provided better sunlight, ventilation and green space for inhabitants.

Playful Photography

The Apollon is a clever camera design that makes taking photos an entirely new experience! If your casual photographer friends have one too, you can link together wirelessly and capture the same photo from different perspectives. Better yet, their camera will automatically transfer the image to your device so you all have the same digitals.

Catalytic Clothing

Catalytic Clothing is a  new technological innovation that breaks the boundaries and  limitations of traditional function of clothing, by giving it a new meaning of air purifying.

Links below describe technological innovation behind nano molecules and Photocatalysts and their scientific use as well as application in design and fashion.

I accidentally came across Catalytic Clothing, while searching something else on the internet, and wanted to share it wit others because it could’ve been a great help and inspiration for Air Freshener project ( 3rd year Industrial Design, first semester).

There are no limitations to technology, EXPLORE IT!

2010 IDEA winners... In case you missed them

I tried to search the blog for any posts linking to Co-Design, but found none.

2010 International Design Excellence Awards are annual product design awards, which Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) organizes. In case some of us missed them.

Here is an alternate link to same content on the IDSA domain.

One of the best in show is also my favorite; the Slingbox 700U. New Deal Design cleverly made the aluminum exterior, which is also the case, the heatsink to dissipate heat very attractively.

Not only do I want one, but its a silent ingenious solution. I would gladly have more noiseless, fanless entertainment electronics.

GOOD IDEAS

Just saw this on Seth Godin's blog and thought it was appropriate to share with the classes, especially while you are coming up with crazy ideas for your last assignment!

Good luck with the project and i am looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

Where do ideas come from?

  1. Ideas don't come from watching television
  2. Ideas sometimes come from listening to a lecture
  3. Ideas often come while reading a book
  4. Good ideas come from bad ideas, but only if there are enough of them
  5. Ideas hate conference rooms, particularly conference rooms where there is a history of criticism, personal attacks or boredom
  6. Ideas occur when dissimilar universes collide
  7. Ideas often strive to meet expectations. If people expect them to appear, they do
  8. Ideas fear experts, but they adore beginner's mind. A little awareness is a good thing
  9. Ideas come in spurts, until you get frightened. Willie Nelson wrote three of his biggest hits in one week
  10. Ideas come from trouble
  11. Ideas come from our ego, and they do their best when they're generous and selfless
  12. Ideas come from nature
  13. Sometimes ideas come from fear (usually in movies) but often they come from confidence
  14. Useful ideas come from being awake, alert enough to actually notice
  15. Though sometimes ideas sneak in when we're asleep and too numb to be afraid
  16. Ideas come out of the corner of the eye, or in the shower, when we're not trying
  17. Mediocre ideas enjoy copying what happens to be working right this minute
  18. Bigger ideas leapfrog the mediocre ones
  19. Ideas don't need a passport, and often cross borders (of all kinds) with impunity
  20. An idea must come from somewhere, because if it merely stays where it is and doesn't join us here, it's hidden. And hidden ideas don't ship, have no influence, no intersection with the market. They die, alone.

The Desk... of a few designers

Desk - Music and Sound Design from Aaron Trinder Film:Motion:Music on Vimeo.

Interesting perspectives on what the desk, and the accompanying mess means to a handful of designers.
And commentary on the future of the desk, in that is will probably take a less physical form.

A nice design short.

Paul Rand's insight on design

Paul Rand has a huge influence in graphic design. He designed many classic icons including the IBM, UPS and ABC logos. In this animation created by
The Imaginary Forces, which created many famous movie trailers and advertisement was based on a Paul Rand interview. This short animation is created for Paul Rand's Posthumous induction into The One Club's Hall of Fame for 2007.

Although this is from a Graphic Designers point of view, I feel that it relates greatly also to Industrial Design. Since the approach and the process is quite similar. This animation is not only very nicely done, but it is also inspiring and gives me a further insight and approach to design. It is all about the balance of form and content, but in our case its form and function. And I am sure the language of form that Paul Rand describes applies into Industrial Design also, maybe they are worth exploring and looking at.
